    Spam Fried Rice Ingredients

To make this spam fried rice you'll need the following ingredients:

    • Spam: Many different brands sell spam. Feel free to pick one that you like. I love to use and recommend buying original Spam. It just has the best flavor and is perfect for this recipe!
    • White rice: You'll also need some type of white rice for this recipe. I recommend using Jasmine rice, but other types of rice work, too! Make sure to use rice that is at least a day old or store your freshly cooked rice in the refrigerator for as long as possible before using it.
    • Frozen vegetables: Frozen peas, carrots, and corn make this fried rice super delicious and satiating. You can use other vegetables, I just love the combination of these three vegetables. Plus, using frozen vegetables makes this fried rice super quick to prepare.
    • Eggs: Eggs are another key ingredient to make delicious fried rice. I love to scramble them, but you could also add a fried egg on top of your serving.
    • Aromatics: You'll need garlic and green onion to make this spam fried rice flavorful and delicious.
    • Sauces: For the stir fry sauce, you'll need soy sauce, oyster sauce, and ketchup. Make sure to not skip any of these ingredients as they are important for the flavor of this dish.
    • Seasonings: To season the fried rice, you'll need red pepper flakes, sesame oil, and black pepper.

How to make spam fried rice

Pan-fry the spam. First, place the cubed spam in a pan and pan-fry it from all sides until browned.

    Tips & Notes

    • Always use leftover rice when you make fried rice. Fresh rice has more moisture and is softer, which will make your fried rice mushy. It's best to use leftover rice for fluffy and delicious fried rice. Alternatively, cook the rice in the morning and place it in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.
    • Prepare most of the ingredients before you start cooking. There isn't a lot to prepare, but make sure to chop and measure out the ingredients before you start cooking. It's going to make your life a lot easier and stress-free!
    • Use a non-stick pan to make fried rice. I love to use stainless steel cookware for most of my recipes, but for fried rice, I prefer non-stick pans. You could also use a seasoned carbon steel wok or a well-seasoned cast iron pan.
    • Adjust the spice level to your taste. The recipe as specified in the recipe box below is slightly spicy, so adjust it to your preferences. You could change the amount of red pepper flakes or use fresh chili peppers if you want to make the fried rice spicier.
    • Don't stir fry the fried rice for too long after adding the sesame oil. As sesame oil loses its aroma very quickly when it is heated, it's best to toss the fried rice until just combined.

    Variations

    • Feel free to pick other vegetables than I did. Fried rice recipes are actually great for using any leftover vegetables that may be sitting in your refrigerator. You could also use other frozen vegetables. I sometimes use bell pepper, broccoli, edamame, or bean sprouts.
    • If you don't like spam, use another type of meat or seafood. You could use chicken, beef, or shrimp. Another option is making this dish vegetarian and skipping the meat. It's totally up to you!
    • Switch up the flavor of the fried rice by using other sauces. You could add a splash of dark soy sauce for a very deep flavor or add some gochujang for a slightly spicy and peppery taste.
    • Add additional ingredients that add to the taste of this spam fried rice. One ingredient I love to use is chopped roasted nori. It's super delicious and tastes great in this fried rice recipe!

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is spam fried rice?

Spam fried rice is a classic fried rice dish that uses cubed spam. Depending on where you eat it, it will have varying additional ingredients. This spam fried rice recipe is very similar to classic Chinese-style fried rice.

What does this spam fried rice taste like?

This spam fried rice has a beautiful balance of umami, sweetness, and spiciness. It doesn't taste overly strong in any direction but focuses on a very balanced flavor profile instead. You can also taste the sesame oil, which adds a wonderful taste to the spam fried rice. It's perfect for you if you love Chinese-style fried rice dishes!

    Is this fried rice spicy?

It is slightly spicy. The only spicy ingredient is red pepper flakes, so feel free to adjust the amount you use to your personal preferences!

What do I eat with spam fried rice?

Spam fried rice is already quite satiating, so you don't necessarily need to serve anything with it. You could serve a few side dishes such as kimchi, oi muchim (Korean cucumber salad), or kongnamul muchim (Korean bean sprout side dish) to make your meal more fun and delicious.

    How do I store leftovers?

You can store leftovers in an airtight container in your refrigerator for 3-4 days. Just reheat them in a microwave or on your stove for a quick and delicious meal!

Can you freeze spam fried rice?

I don't recommend freezing spam fried rice. Usually, rice turns out quite mushy when you reheat it after it has been frozen. That's why I recommend storing it in the refrigerator. Also, fried rice is really easy to make, so I'd recommend whipping up a fresh serving with frozen vegetables when you crave it!
